There is more to Delhi than this and a few things you should know before planning your trip.  Delhi is the second-largest metropolis in India. It is situated on the  River Yamuna, the site of many ancient monuments and archaeological sites.

New Delhi, developed on the south side after WW1, became the national capital at independence in 1947 and  houses the federal government and the Parliament of India.

Traveling in Delhi

As always in a foreign country, it is best to travel in groups. If this is not possible, then the next best thing is to follow an outline of places to stay and what to see. If you are a woman traveling alone, you can become quite intimidated by Delhi especially, with the amount of beggars that are everywhere, and they don?t give up very easily. As for Delhi itself, by traveling alone, you are in no more danger here than any other city you may be visiting.

Where to Eat

When it comes to restaurants, Delhi offers a wide variety of places to eat. such as the Bukhara at the Maurya Palace Sheraton Hotel and Towers or the Karim at Jama Masjid, a branch at Nizammuddin West. There are lots of places to wine and dine in this beautiful city and you can dine on western food as well as Indian food. You will also find many fast food places and 24 hour coffee shops.

Indian food is very tasty but also spicy, so you have to judge for yourself what you wish to dine on. Most Indian foods are eaten without cutlery, and although this is not an absolute requirement for tourists, it could prove to be fun.

Visiting Delhi

When you come to Delhi, bring light clothing, as it gets very hot. Don't go around in shorts or strap shirts, as you will be asking for a bad sunburn or sun stroke, but wear light clothing that covers the body well. Another thing to remember about Delhi is that the safest place to find good drinking water is in one of the better restaurants.

As in any major city there are scams. Just use your common sense. Some of them are very easy to catch while others could be difficult. If you can pre-arrange all your travels, it would be best to do so even to the taxi that will take you from the airport. Indians are a little touchy about their religion, so if you go into a temple, be sure you are dressed properly. You will be expected to remove your shoes, and women are to be respected.

If you prefer shopping indoors, there are malls and showrooms that will take your breath away. You will return from this vacation with so many unique gifts.
