If you are not sure about visiting Bangkok but you are not sure about what might happen if any problems arise with police, there are some steps you can take to protect yourself. You have to be on guard because the potential is always there for crimes of opportunity.

Passports

You do have to carry your passport with you at all times and you have to be very careful where you keep it. Criminals do try to steal passports and credit cards. If you rent a scooter or motorcycle, you should never hand over your passport as a guarantee that you will return the vehicle.

Drugs

There are rumors that people will try to slip drugs into your luggage. This rarely happens and if you are vigilant, pack your own bags and keep them with you all the time, you won't have anything to worry about. It is a fact of life that you never accept packages from strangers to carry for them, so by just watching out for your own belongings will keep you safe enough.

When you are in a nightclub, you should never leave your drinks unattended. This is because there have been cases where unsuspecting tourists have had drugs slipped into their drinks. You should also be wary of accepting drinks from strangers, even at the home of a friend.

You should never become involved with drugs of any kind inside Thailand. Possession of even the smallest amount carries a prison term as the penalty.

Buying Gems

One thing that some tourists to Bangkok fall for and lose money is the offer by guides to take them to gem shops. You have to pay for the gems on your credit card and to make things easier for you, the store will ship them to your home address. You will get the gems, but they are nowhere near the value of what you pay for them.

Watch What You Say

In Thailand, it is a criminal offence to make any derogatory remark against the King or members of the Royal Family. Doing so could mean a sentence of 3 to 15 years in prison.
