San Marino is a tiny state bordering Italy. The scenic beauty of the gently rolling hills surrounded by the three peaks of Mount Titano is a photographer's dream. The whole country only has a population of about 30,000, so this will give you an idea of how small it actually is. The capital is also called San Marino and there are eight smaller villages for you to visit.

This building dates back to 1361 and is the oldest in the country. The wooden crucifix dates back to 300 A.D. and is reputed to have come from the church at Murata. There are also a number of paintings here by Niccolo Alunno of Foligno.

City of San Marino

No cars are permitted in the medieval center of this town and tourists enjoy walking the narrow winding streets. The stone houses along the streets all have red roofs. In this city you will see many fortresses and building with medieval turrets. Visit the Museum Art Gallery, see the colourful guards at the Piazza della Liberta, and the10th-century Rocca Guaita. Take a footpath that leads from the basilica to the fortresses on Mount Titano, from which you have a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding countryside.

Travel to and within San Marino

You can take a flight from London to Bologna or Rimini. Bologna is 78 miles from San Marino and Rimini is 17 miles away. The same thing applies to the train station if you want to travel from one of the European cities by rail. There are buses that travel to the country from Bologna, Rimini and other parts of Italy. You can also drive here in your own car.

San Marino is landlocked, completely surrounded bt italy.Measuring only 23 kn. It won?t take you long to drive the length and breadth of this country. In fact, if you wish you can make it a walking tour and camp for the night or stay in one of the villages.
