Incongruous to the remainder of the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen offers quite the profusion of fertile lands and breathtaking mountains. Lacking the barren desert that so many associate with Arab countries, the country of Yemen has developed into an astounding tourist spot. Mind-blowing natural scenery and amazing architectural features transform the landscape into a remarkably picturesque place. Fruit-growing valleys and golden beaches are among the popular tourist hideouts in Yemen and in journeying through the country, one may come across a plethora of striking flora and fauna.

Attractions

Old City of Sana'a

This incredible ancient city, acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the oldest of its kind in the Arab world. The city remains inhabited to this day and is rumored to have been founded by one of the sons of Noah. What?s more it is likely to have been built around the second century BC, making its preservation an even more remarkable feat. Countless mosques and other architectural features are among the highlights of the city and make the region all the more majestic.

Travel to Yemen

Traveling to Yemen by boat is possible as the country is in possession of a several ports but the preferred method of transportation into the country is airplane. A flight from London is roughly eight hours, eventually touching down at one of a number of airports.

Travel within Yemen

Many of the roads are beyond repair in Yemen and thus it is advised that a first time traveler to the country not hire a car to journey around the area. Domestic flights to various destinations in Yemen are indeed a viable possibility, as is travel via a local ferry. Other modes of transport around Yemen include taxi services and intercity bus services.

Language

Arabic is the predominant language in the country with English being a close second.

Visa

Passport and visa are a requirement for foreigners entering the country. Nationals from allied countries can, however, gain access to Yemen without possessing a visa.

Food & Drink

Numerous soups, rice and spiced meat dishes are among the national favorites in Yemen. Hotel restaurants serve alcohol as well as varieties of ethnic foods but buying alcohol for a Yemeni citizen is strictly prohibited.

Safety

It is suggested that traveling to northern Yemen is quite dangerous as the region has been a hostile place for a rather long time. The remainder of the country is basically free of any danger though it is advised that you travel with company.

Shopping

Market places are ideal for purchasing exotic goods and handmade ceramics, clothing and jewelry. Other such items sold at the markets include spices, incense and even shark teeth.
