South America

South America is the fourth largest continent in the world and home to many amazing mountain ranges, tropical rain forests, deserts, and the Amazon River. This continent has something to offer every type of visitor whether they are looking for beautiful beaches, ancient cultures or historic sites. Spanish and Portuguese are the primary languages spoken here, but many people speak English the culture of the area is one that treats all guests as royalty

Northern South America

Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guyana

The countries of the northern part of South American are also known as "Caribbean South America" as they border the Caribbean Sea and each country has something to offer visitors year round. Colombia has some of the best backpacking in the world where you can see some amazing animal and plant life. The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the highest mountain range along the coast and features dense tropical rainforests along its northern side. If you wish you can even see the "Ciudad Perdida" or "The Lost City" where you can see ancient ruins. Keep in mind that this is a 5 day trek, but can be much faster if you go by helicopter.

If you make your way east to the next country in the north of the continent you will visit Venezuela. In the city of Coro you can find some of the most amazing colonial architectures anywhere and you can also see one of the oldest cathedrals in the country in the Plaza de San Clemente. If you make your way to Paraguan Island you can visit the Paraguan Peninsula which has been declared a national monument. Here you can see various fauna including mountain cats, ocelots, and various species of birds.

Visit the highest single drop waterfall in the world in Guyana, Kaieteur Fall, which is 5 times the height of Niagara Falls. If you visit South American between February and July you can go to the Galibi Wildlife Reserve in Suriname where you can see 4 different species of sea turtles nesting on its beaches. History lovers should visit one of the most famous prisons in the world "Devil's Island" in French Guyana made famous by many books and movies including "Papillon" staring Steve McQueen. Currently the former jail is the center for the French/European spaceprogram.

Southern South America

Argentina, Uruguay

Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the capital city and is remains a shopper's paradise. In addition you can visit many cultural and historical sites including Teatro Colon, the world' largest Opera House. The Isaac Fernandez Blanco Museum of Spanish-American Art, the Ambrosetti Museum, and the Museum of Colonial History are all tourist attractions that cannot be missed when visiting Argentina.

For the tourist who likes to relax in the sun, Uruguay is the place to visit. This country features 300 miles of sandy beaches along the Atlantic and also has beautiful hot springs. In Montevideo there are nine major beaches for tourist, but you can also enjoy other activities casinos, art festivals, clubs and many historical sites.

Eastern South America

Brazil, Paraguay

Also know as the "Marvelous City", Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The city harbor is truly scenic and features its rocky outcrop known as "Pao de Azucar" or "Sugar Loaf". On the other side is the Corcovado peak the jewel of the Rio skyline. It's not a far trek from any hotel to enjoy one of Rio's beautiful beaches including Pepino, Botafogo, and Leme. Boattrips up the Amazon River, for a while only for the backpacker, are now made comfortable by riverboats complete with gambling, reminiscent of the Mississippi during its heyday.

Paraguay features some great attractions for tourists to the area. Along the Paraguay River you can visit the Botanical Gardens, a small zoo, or even play a round of golf. You can also book a tour to visit the beautiful Iguazu Falls and Salto Crystal Falls or even go up river to Villeta. Another popular tourist activity is to follow the "Central Circuit" which is a 125 mile route that showcases some of the cities most famous sites around the capital.

Western South America

Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile

The city of Quito in Ecuador has one the most impressive sites in the world, the Pichincha volcano which overshadows the city with its two peaks, Ruco and Guagua. Quito is also a city where you can see colonial Spanish culture at such sites as the cathedral in the Plaza de la Independencia which is the oldest church in South America.

Peru is a South American country that has more to offer than most countries in the world. This country has beaches, rain forests, deserts, archaeological ruins, and many other historic sites. If in the city of Lima you can visit the Plaza de Armas, which is the main square, has gardens and a bronze fountain. Outside of the square you can also visit the Archbishop's Place, Town Hall, or the Palacio de Gobierno which are all elegantly built.

The State of Santa Cruz in Bolivia is an outdoor adventurer?s paradise. Located near a tropical rain forest it is a great place to fish, swim, or simply observe nature. Other sites that you don' want to miss while visiting Peru include The House of Coins in Potosi, The Colonial Museum in Oruro, and Lake Titicaca in La Paz. The Golden Pantiti in the Bolivian jungle has many navigable rivers to explore as well.

A visit to South America would not be complete without a visit to Chile?s waterfalls at Laguna de Laja. The Lake District is also a place you will want to visit if you want to do some great fishing. The Pacific Islands off the coast of Chili are also worth a visit if you have time. Easter Island is under possession of Chili and is famous for gigantic stone figures all over the island.

    Bariloche

    Enjoy the deep blue lakes and the towering mountains of Bariloche or San Carlos de Bariloche, located in the Patagonia region of Argentina. It is about a two-hour flight from Argentina and is a year round tourist destination. With the many lakes in this area, there are plenty of water sports for you to enjoy. Take a hike in the mountains, go backpacking to see sights off the beaten track and in winter enjoy the thrilling skiing.

    This resort town is noted for its alpine setting at the foot of the mountains. Stroll the streets of town, drop into the pubs, restaurants and tea-houses you find here. This town is renowned for its chocolate, so you do have to try some while you?re here and buy some to take back home.

    Mar del Plata

    Mar del Plata is another of the premier destination for tourists to Argentina. It offers 17 miles of beach and opportunities for sport fishing. This is university town, with a lively nightlife and casinos. The beaches of this town have some of the best surfing in South America and even if you don?t surf, just watching from the beach is a thrilling sight. Visit Torreon del Monje, tour the village of Santa Clara del Mar or even rent a condo or villa here for the duration of your visit. There are many museums for you to visit and the shopping is a pure delight.

    Travel to Argentina

    When you fly to Argentina, there are two International airports located in Buenos Aires, but on opposite sides of the city. There are also smaller airports throughout the country, making it easy for you to travel from one part of Argentina to another.

    In order to travel by bus to Argentina, you would have to use the bus services originating in one of the neighboring countries.

    Food and Drinks

    One of the foods that you have to sample when you visit Argentina is the asado or barbeque. Beef is the meat of choice for meals here and it is some of the best beef in the world. Italian cuisine is also popular, due to the Italian ancestry of most of the population. However, if you order pasta, you have to order the sauce separately. Empanadas (turnovers) are very tasty snacks that contain meat, cheese and a variety of fillings.

    Mate is the national drink. This is a non-alcoholic drink that tastes very much like tea. It can be served hot or cold and the regional form of this drink is called Cimarron. Beer is served in the restaurants in one-litre bottles and wine is readily available.

    Language

    The official language is Spanish with a regional Castillian dialect. Portuguese and English are understood and spoken in small amounts in the major tourist destinations.

    Visas

    In order to travel to Argentina, you need to have a valid passport and either a return ticket or one ongoing to another country.

    Safety

    In the larger cities of Argentina, you will be able to recognize the best areas by the police presence. The outlying areas of small towns and villages are not really safe areas for tourists, especially at night. When you use taxis, it is best if you use the hotel taxis or look for one with a lighted green sign on the roof.

    Before you visit Argentina, make sure you have vaccinations for tetanus, typhoid, polio and hepatitis as precautionary measures. Ease yourself into the local diet and the tap water is usually safe to drink. If you prefer bottled water, it is readily available.

    Shopping

    Buenos Aires is the premier shopping location in Argentina, but most of the other larger cities have malls and markets where you can buy many delightful items. Shop for yourself or for souvenirs to take back home. When you visit the markets, you are expected to bargain. The prices are usually a lot higher than what you will eventually pay.

    Attractions

     Banos

    With a rumbling volcano in the background, Banos has become a tourist destination in Ecuador. There are famous hot springs here and easy access to the jungle. The Basilica of Nuestra  Senora del Agua Santa is a site to behold with the evidence of all the miracles that have taken place here. Pilgrims come on a regular basis to offer prayers of hope and thanksgiving. Built from molten rock, it features a Gothic style of architecture.

    Visit the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic Institute to learn about Tunqurahua, the volcano the locals call the ?Black Giant?. Here you will see breathtaking photos of this natural sight. The hot springs are within walking distance of the center of town and there are many spas and baths where you can enjoy the pampering you want on vacation. Take a visit to the beautiful Manto de la Virgen, one of the many waterfalls in the area.

    Walk the many trails in the hills and up towards the volcano or enjoy a trek into the rainforest. This is just one example of the delights that await you in any part of this country.

    Travel to Ecuador

    You can fly into the airport of the capital city of Quito. From here there are buses to all other parts of the country.

    Language

    The official language is Spanish, but in the larger cities and popular tourist destinations most of the people speak English.

    Safety

    You May experience altitude sickness when you first visit Quito, but once you relax for a while you will feel better. You do need to have lots of mosquito repellent and vaccination against malaria. Mosquitoes are prevalent in the wet season.

    Eat only well-cooked food and drink bottled water. Eat only the foods cooked at your hotel and do not eat food sold by the street vendors.

    Food and Drink

    Experience the unique flavor of the local food when you visit Ecuador. Some of the examples include:
    ? Enconado de Pescado ? a fish dish with coconut juice
    ? Tapao - wheat with fish and banana
    ? Arroz con Menestra, Camarón, y patacones - rice served with lentils, shrimp and pressed green fried banana

    Visas

    To enter Ecuador, you need to have a valid passport and proof of a return ticket. Visitors are allowed to stay in the country for 180 days and immigration officials will stamp your passport for either 60 or 80 days at a time. Always carry your passport with you, especially if you travel on the buses to another location. The police regularly do checks of passengers on the buses.

    Shopping

    There are many markets where you can purchase items of all kinds from clothing to souvenirs. The larger cities have elaborate shopping malls where you can have a truly divine shopping experience.
