Queensland began in 1824 as a penal colony. Now it is often referred to as the "Sunshine State".
Inland is the Great Dividing Range which goes down into N.S.W. and reaches Victoria.
To the west of that there are vast areas of arid dessert. However it is the mostly tropical coastal strip which predominates.
From Brisbane, the Capital, and nearby Surfers Paradise in the south the coast going north is dominated by beach towns and National Parks. Further north Cairns is a great center to visit the Great Barrier Reef.  In the rainy season northern dry riverbeds can become swollen impassible flooded plains, so timing is important.
