Originally called Van Dieman's Land , Tasmania, population, approximately half a million, is the only island state in Australia.
Unlike most of Australia, this state has the traditional four seasons. Winter is cold, wet and windy. Summers are delightful, especially in the north. Large areas are National Parks or reserves, about 20 per cent.
Its Capital City, Hobart on the south-east coast, is Australia's second oldest and began in 1803. There is an interesting, very well preserved early, settlement district.
Favorite spots to visit are nearby Richmond with its original Goal and Bridge, contructed by convicts in 1823.
