Western Australia, with about one third of the total land mass, is the country's largest state. It has vast natural wealth but because of its isolation was very slow to develop.

The Capital City of Perth, on the Swan River,  is now a vibrant place and with its surrounding areas has over three quarters of the state population which approaches two and a half million. Traces of Aboriginal settlements from about fourty thousand  years ago have been found in the area.
South of Perth is the famous Margaret River wine growing region, going north away from the coast it becomes very harsh desert.
